Today was one of the days that I felt so lucky to come to Melbourne Uni. It started off with me spending 3 hours trying to work out how to get any funding to go towards my exchange, how to navigate Centerlink and then ringing up employers to help me work out how much money I’ve earnt in the past 18 months, but finished off with 2 great lectures!
In Public Policy we had John Cain (former premier of Victoria), who was a fantastic speaker. Then in Holocaust and Genocide we had a survivor of the Cambodian genocide, who was really funny (which was a bit of a surprise considering the subject) and also a brilliant story teller. He also turned out to be Alice Pung’s (Australian author of Unpolished Gem) father.
They both made me feel so lucky and privileged that I go to such a decent uni with such great guest speakers.
Then on the bus home I bumped into a girl I met at an exchange function last week who is also going to UCD, and we had a really nice chat.
So for an unbelievably frustrating morning, my day finished quite nicely.

Alice Pung used to live on my corridor!
Wow, you get guest lectures in your subjects? We just get the big ones open to the public down at law (and none whatsoever at music, although that’s because we have guest concerts instead). It’s a pretty fantastic series, though, we’ve had at least three or four High Court Justices visit within the past year or so. I have to agree with you that it’s a pretty nice perk of uni.
