Chapter Fifty-Nine: Parent Appreciation Day (~jinghan)
Pick a day in Jinghan’s life. Say x for some x after Jinghan came to Davis.
On day x, Jinghan comes home from uni. She has probably been to class for 3-4hours and studied in the study hall for 4-5hours.
What Jinghan would like to do is finish her homework (oh yeah – they give us plenty of that here in America) and then go to bed.
It’s probably 7pm (sometimes 8pm or 9pm) when Jinghan realises it’s 7pm and she is starving. Jinghan forages in the fridge for food (sometimes Jinghan has to go across the street to the supermarket to buy food because she has not quite mastered the magical skill that mothers seems to posses of acquiring the right amount of food all in one shipping trip.) A lot of shipping, haphazadous multitasking and general mess-making ensues.
Most of the time Jinghan is able to come up with something nice and edible. (Sometimes it’s just edible, I haven’t come up with anything inedible yet… it’s only a matter of time)
Jinghan then eats, which is in fact the least important and least time consuming part of being in the kitchen. Because then Jinghan feels like an octopus as she tries to locate all the things that need washing and put them in the sink and wash them at the same time as throwing out food scraps.
And if you think this is the end you think wrong, because Jinghan then makes some more mess making herself lunch for the next day. (Stage 2 of mess making is helped along by Jinghan’s preference of stacking her sandwich with at least 5 different ingredients.)
Jinghan then clean the kitchen some more before going to bed, realising she has spent 2 hours in the kitchen and still has plenty of homework to do.
Summary Sheet:
Appreciation for amount of time, energy and care parents put into cooking and cleaning:
- before davis: medium
- after davis: very high!
On the bright side I really like shopping for groceries and cooking. And I feel like I’m spending much more time in the real world as opposed to 1) studying all the time 2) blogging all the time 3) blogging when I should be studying all the time
Going to bed tired very day is actually a good feeling when it feels like “I’ve done something with my day”
x ⇒ goodness, hence proven
