Not quite Cinderella (Zoë)
Last night was the Ormond Ball. I don’t want to sound too negative, but basically it was a waste of $60. A ball sounds really sophisiticated and elegant, but it was just a night at a club, which really isn’t my thing. If I’d known it was going to be like that, I would have just spent a night in my room watching TV. Of course, some people really enjoyed it, but if you’re like me and don’t drink and don’t like clubbing, you’d be better off saving your money. Don’t get sucked in by the term “ball”.
There are notes around Ormond reminding us to let the office know whether or not we’re staying at college or going home for the Easter break, which makes me think of Harry Potter everytime I see them. (Speaking of Harry Potter, my Chem pracs never fail to remind me of Potions. Luckily for me, my demonstrator is nice and not at all Snape-like.) Unlike Harry, I’m going home, which I’m really looking forward to. I miss Shepparton, and my dogs, and just the general comfort of being at home. Living at college has its perks, but I’m envious of the people who can attend uni while staying at home. College still feels like a college, or just a place to stay, rather than home yet. But it definitely feels more like home than it did even two weeks ago, so I assume it’s just a matter of time.
Tonight my beloved Joss Whedon Appreciation Society is having a trivia night. I love trivia, mainly because I’m so competitive. I like to think that I know a lot about Joss Whedon and his television shows, but so does everyone else in the club. So it’s going to be interesting. But fun. Interestingly fun.
Random fact of the day: It’s William Shatner’s birthday. 🙂
Yeah… I don’t specifically know about the Ormond ball, but I have friends at Trinity who didn’t particularly like their ball either, and some of the JCH people said that the intercollegiate one was a little too wild for their tastes too. I’m told that the JCH ball is better in that respect, but that might well be college rivalry talking.
Hey thats funny, I am envious of people like you who get the wonderful priviledge of staying in college. I have always wanted to live in college but its simply not affordable for me. I love the traditions (such as wearing the robes for dinner) and the general Harry Potter aura that surrounds the colleges. It would be awesome to hang out with people staying in rooms next to you and having late night talks in your room. In fact, I emailed Ormond if they were accepting mid years and they replied with an enthusiastic ‘yes’ followed by immediate instructions on how to arrange an interview. I doubt I will go ahead with it though, but maybe in my 3rd or 4th year. Anyway, I hope that college will become more of a home for you in the coming weeks.
Actually, the cost’s not too bad because a lot of them give partial (some colleges even give full) scholarships… it actually works out to be cheaper for me to stay in college than it does to live outside because my scholarship covers maybe 30% of the cost of staying there. But since I’m moving over from overseas, I’d have to spend a fortune regardless of where I lived in setup costs. The situation might be a little different if you can live at home.

I’m a college girl (Janet Clarke Hall) and i love it here =) but yeah, i can totally relate….the intercollegiate ball was exactly the same. and like you, i had naively been expecting a ‘ball’. it was just like a night at a club, in which case, why on earth did i pay 60 bucks? and secondly, i wouldn’t have gotten so dressed up! my shoes will never be the same again after the beer and vomit splattered on them -.- but yeah, apparently the JCH ball is actually an elegant affair so i can’t wait for that =)
I too was excited by the idea of going to a ball at uni – my Mum had filled my head full of ideas of dancing, drinking punch, wearing jewellry, floor length dresses and lipstick…
Luckily my friend told me what they really were before I decided to go to one. The sad thing is that she actually really enjoyed the ball and proceeded to go to practically ALL of them. *shakes head*
