Rambling O Week Post anyone?
Prologue
I had lunch with a friend the day before O Week began and we had a healthy bitch about timetables and the complexity of dealing with subjects etcetera. I finally got my timetable through Alloc8 although a small amount of cringing occurred when I saw what my Wednesdays would be like. Friend is starting Chiro at RMIT and we talked about how much harder it would be to keep in touch and made promises to do so at least once a month. Our last catch up sesh for a while was, despite our best intentions, tainted with anticipation of meeting new people and starting our new lives.
“ I’m glad I’m seeing you today though…” I told her as we perused Lygon street. “My nutty, excitement would be annoying to anyone else.”
Day One
Meeting up with my Host group was awkward for at least the first half an hour. My natural enthusiasm battled to overcome my natural disinclination for mornings as everybody stood around not saying very much. It largely improved as I woke up and introduced myself to A*.
A bond was formed by mutual agreement on the inferiority of the men in our Host group and the awesomeness of Jane Eyre. It was a relief to meet somebody in two of my subjects so early on, and I have growing hope I won’t spend the semester friendless and alone. The highlight of the tour was definitely seeing the libraries and study centres at my disposal this year. *Salivate* Mmm libraries. I love libraries, I just do.
Embracing our rebellious sides, we ditched our host group early and bid adieu after exchanging numbers. I rebumped into the small group of highschool/local friends that are also starting at Melbourne and we began to traipse through the Orientation Carnival. Fast forward through the absorbing of way too much information, joining the SU and picking up as much free stuff as possible. I was finally dragged home by pal-ies Lyri* and Liv* (and yes I am embracing the use of pseudonym). Urrgh, groan, tiired. I finished my first day with a pile of stuff the needed to be sorted through, as well as timetable adjustments to be made, as I struggled to keep my eyes open.
Day Two
Oh, kinda anticlimactic after the noise and movement of the day before. Second day of O Week essentially consisted of housekeeping: going to the ASU lectures, course welcome etcetera. Highlight: John Harris’ (Pres of the Melbourne Arts Students Society) hair. Low Light: The Academic Writing lecture was not the most boring 45 minutes of my life, but it made the shortlist.
Day Three
The Clubs and Societies Expo was big, busy fun with people everywhere trying to woo you into their court. Product! More free stuff. Most of the day was spent wandering around with new friend C*. We had an especially great time checking out the Union Building, with particular attention to the food court and the Rowden White’s dvd collection. Alot of time was spent on the South Lawn eyeing the ALP’s beer and cringing at the comically bad cover band (Sorry guys, but I beg of you desist with the baad pseudo-English accent).I joined quite a few clubs including: The University of Melbourne Secular Society, The Star Trek Appreciation Society* (mock not I joined for the Dr Who), The Uni book club and , of course, M-ASS. Speaking of M-ASS I inevitably chose to bounce on over to their OWeek party with a bunch of fellow arts students plus others (one increasingly uncomfortable science student and two non Melbourne goers). Its always hard to tell if a party is dull or your mood just is but I was somehow disappointed with the MASS shindig. Maybe it was because I thought a group so evidently awesome would throw an unworldly par-tay and it was just so-so, or maybe I was tired after the day but we ended up leaving pretty early. Meh, another day I suppose. I have high expectations for the upcoming Week 3 Party and the Booze Cruise.
Day Four
Well ok, there wasn’t a real day four. I did come to the uni, but only for an hour or two so Lyri could pick up her books. Overall I had a great O Week. I know there are quite a lot of others who feel a little deflated but I can’t help feeling lucky that, however lame certain elements were, we’re part of a uni which has such a sense of campus life. At least we have an O Week and not just an O Day like VU or RMIT. The best parts of my O Week were probably not even that related to orientation, like reading Farrago, which is pretty excellent, and discovering the godly Kere Kere coffee station.
Now before classes loom I have the O week Sexy Party to attend, pre reading to finish and house work to neglect. So adieu until next time.
We should all have stormed out en masse from the Academic Writing (pause while Cara tres to find ways of expressing displeasure without expletives)…. tripe-fest.
LOL! It was indeed a… tripefest. -_-
Academic Writing? Yeah, that was the one I left after 30 seconds, after the magic words “all of this will be on the LMS.”
Now, now, just because it is on LMS doesn’t mean that you should not attend lectures.
