85 Broads? What the hell is that ’bout?

So inspired by Johanna’s mention of attending the 85 Broads launch event next Tuesday night…and much to my excitement that someone I kind-of-sorta-know is attending our launch event, I thought I would take the time to briefly mention to any readers about the existence of 85 Broads on campus.

85 Broads is a global womens’ network with the aim of connecting and inspiring intelligent women world-wide. It is our belief that if women aross all generations, support and share with each other, we can each acheive our dreams and contribute something back to society.

What it comes down to, is basically having a vision and finding other like-minded women who can understand your vision and share it.

I’d heard about this organisation a few years ago. However two things stopped be from joining. A) It’s name! – which I thought sounded rather non-feminine like and B) The fact it was not available for Australian students.

Fast forward to the end of last year.
A) I finally found out that the name was merely a play on words, and in fact was a great way to start a conversation! Trust me…when you tell someone you’re part of an organisation with the word “broad” in the name… they are immediately like “what is that all about?!”

B) I found out that attempts were being made to start up an Australian chapter of the organisation. Immediately I put my hand up to help out as after attending an information session on the organisation, I was captured by its passion and vision, and it was something I wanted to be part of and contribute to.

Hours and hours later….the 85 Broads committee has worked tiredlessly to bring to Melbourne University a club dedicated to making an impact. Next Tuesday is our Cocktail Evening launch event – free for all RSVP’d attendees. We will be having a number of notable female speakers on the night, providing a chance for women from all different backgrounds to think about where they are going in their lives and the opportunities and possibilities that exist out there.

I am very excited and 100% nervous about this event finally happening after the months of planning that have gone into it. Please, if you see me on the night, do say hi. Not only is 85 Broads a great way to improve your professional network, but it is also a great way to meet passionate, inspiring and intelligent young women – and possibly some great new friends!

xx

  1. I’ll be going 😀 Unless I have an orchestra tute then, which I probably will. D’you think they’ll mind if I arrive an hour or so late?

  2. Better email to check… Sophie, do you know who Suzanne should contact?

I am still incredibly nervous about not being finance-savvy. But I heard that almost 250 places are gone, so I’m assuming I can’t be the lone Arts representative! Well, Sophie and Suzanne, hopefully see you there!

  3. Suzanne, sorry for my slow reply.

I would advise that if you plan to come, you turn up on time because we have a fairly tight schedule of how things will be run and of course, it is always respectful to the hosts if you can make it there at an appropriate time.

Plus, people on time will get a free showbag! So that is worth something right!? Lol.

We will be accepting late-comers as we understand that some people have unexpected delays, but it would be very must appreciated if you could make it on time 🙂

Please come say hi to me if you are there!

    xx

  4. Johanna,

You definitely will not be the only Arts student there! I wouldn’t worry. The committee itself has some Commerce/Arts students, plus an Engineering student and Law student and Science student….so there is a variety of us!

We have made invitations welcome to all faculty students and the night is definitely not just about business / finance type things. The organisation started from a business base, but the over-arching aim is for it to include all disciplines. We definitely welcome all types!

We were down to the last 20 places last time I heard…so we may have even be sold out by now [not that it is technically a ‘sale’ as it’s free!]!

Anyways. Look forward to seeing you there!

  5. Lone Arts representative? That’s not so bad – I’m going to be the lone representative of the Neanderthals (probably not a good one at that).

Perhaps I should do a Mel Gibson with my showbag of goodies.
