Failte (Georgie)
And that is the only word I know in Irish – not Gaelic – and it means ‘welcome’. It’s pronounced ‘fault-ye’ and is plastered over signs and leaflets everywhere.
Am still in Ireland having a bit of a wander before uni, which starts in 8 days. To keep things short I think I might make a list:
– Spent 3 days in Killarney, County Kerry. Was beautiful. Hung out for a day with a lovely American girl and saw ‘The Dark Knight’
– Spent a night in Cork and kissed the Blarney Stone.
– Spent a few nights in Banagher, County Offaly. Went to Birr Castle and Clonmacnoise, which are the ruins of an ancient monastry.
– Bought a Claddagh ring as my souvenir from Galway.
– Spent a few nights in Tullamore where I went to a a traditional Irish music festival. Bumped into the Prime Minister of Ireland and got his autograph.
– Am now in County Donegal, right up the top of Ireland. Went through parts of Northern Ireland and saw a ‘Londonderry’ sign with the ‘London’ graffittied out.
– Today I went to a famine village and the very random haunted house next to it. I was actually scared.
– Just caught a bit of the Rose of Tralee on tv. Had never heard of it before I came to Ireland.
– Made friends with a 5 year old on the 4 hour bus ride from Dublin to Letterkenney and had to play eye spy for about an hour.
I’m really looking forward to starting uni, especially not having to move around so much and being able to unpack and have my clothes in a wardrobe rather than scattered all over the floor. Am a little nervous too, but hopefully it shall be fine.
Am missing friends and family a little, but mostly the aussie things I say being understood. eg. ‘Your terrible Murial’ or ‘not happy jan’ or when someone says ‘let’s go’ I automatically want to say ‘sportsco’.
I think I shall have to leave it there for now as it’s late and I have to be up early tomorrow to go to Derry. Good night!
Wow… that sounds amazing! Glad to hear you’re having fun… good luck for the upcoming semester of uni 🙂
Thanks Suzanne!
