A reflection of past 6 months (Jim)
Holiday has gone pretty relaxing for me. I found some balance in my life. I studied (went over the subject contents and improved on essays) and did some volunteering work at the local legal community center, which is quite good. (good experience)
I also PLAYED TOO. WATCH SOME MOVIES/tvs and catch up with family mainly.
Now to the main reflection, which i aim to write for the new 1st yrs. THe assessment is on hypertheical questions and essay.
T0rt Law Exam: the hyperthetical questions (the style is like: problem solving typed)
I found it hard to apply the precedents or principles to the exam problems. ie using the knowledge/subject content to solve the problem for the clients.
Solution: I haven’t had enough practice of doing it through the hectic semester. I have to make this a piority this yr. I found explaining the concept/precedent to other people, like family, is very useful.
have a debate with them. It is fun too.
Also try to expand on the facts of the case or make up some new situations. If you got time, you can use prof Ian Malkin’s tort text book, which supplies great exam typed problems and case summaries.
One key pt for doing this typed of question: write your exam answers in a way that would allow a client to understand. (explain clearly and logically,—using common sense, MORE IMPORTANTLY APPLY THE LEGAL PRINCIPLES: TO PROVE YOUR CASE)
i GUESSed one of the reason i found this process difficult is because i rushed the reading for the cases as there is not enough time. This yr i will have more patience. also i will use the summary (power pt presentation) supplied by the teacher to aid my understanding.
But i have to say my english is not very strong and this may be more difficult for me. SO dont panic.
One thing i do advised is to study everyday. must DO THE BASICS. or u’d face a potential heart attack during the last week. ;p
if you dont have the motivation to do so, get a study gr. that would keep things interesting.
2) run out of time for exams
well well. just focus on the absolute priorities. Dont waste time on minor arguments. law exams are super densed.
do a practice exam urself and see the reality.
B: Essays: to write a persuasive and logical piece, with citations to prove your argument and every claims/proposition.
i did this so poorly. I always ran out of time to edit my piece. YOu can imagine how long it would take for researching, writing and editing the mammoth piece.
Hope you will start this assessment soon.
don’t panic, it is just like normal english essay except with citations and more logical rather than emotional.
to make it fun: have a researching and discussion group with ur freinds. you can discuss it orally. just don’t shared ur ideas in writing. OR FACE BEING KICKED OUT of the course.
One last word of advice: uni is just a bigger version of high school. Keep doing Do what ever u were doing in high school but in an more indepedent way.
