The blog where I go to all the clubs

Whose been a bad, bad bogger. I’ve been a bad, bad blogger.
So after the shockingly annoying collapse of my night out (turned up to Public Bar and realised I had no ID. The bouncer actually laughed when I asked if I looked old enough to get in with out it), I thought I’d make myself feel better by doing something I have been feeling guilty about not doing for ages.
So I’ve been meaning to post a gigantean post about my extra curricula club and society adventures for a while. For anyone who missed the O Week whoring of the different clubs, or now spontaneously feels the need to get involved with something pointless but fun, or even those silent ghost people who apparently read this blog and are considering going to MelbUni next year. This is for you.

Farrago: I actually do think that, for all its tendency towards radicalism, obscurity and occasional bitterness, Farrago is a quality rag. So the part of me who once wanted to be Christine Amanpour was really excited to get involved. It took me a few goes to actually get inside the Media Collective, that illusive bunch, because of slight-to-large room confusion and by the time I actually found where it was I was pretty nervous. I’m not going to lie to you… they’re all monsters pretty cool. Its low key, sometimes disorganised but creative and fun, plus they do give you lollies and listen to your ideas.  I have submitted my first (sillylittle) article *waits for applause*, and even though I will not be surprised if they choose not to print it, the ghosts of journalistic aspirations past feel strangely satisfied.
On a side note: Congrats to Cristina for her first Farrago article. I love a good discussion on vernacular. (Well… actually VCE English Language left me psychologically scarred, but it was still a very good article. I definitely think we should reintroduce the word ‘brouhaha’ into our language).

The UMSS: I‘m oddly perplexed that I enjoy being a part of the Melb Uni Secular Society as much as I do, but somehow this is actually my favourite of the lot. Ok so granted we’re mainly self-indulgent Atheists who spend a lot of time making snarky comments about the Christian Union’s free food (I personally am highly tolerant of free food, and have no problem with the merging of free food and state), and it has yet to throw a romping good party, but the Q/A sessions are awesome. I do think its worth going to a few of the random public lectures Melbourne University holds, be it on secularism, science fiction or (if you must) Marxist alternatives to yadayadayada, It sounds nerdy but the lectures you choose to go to are usually not the ones you play minesweeper through, and you’re likely to walk out making intelligent facial gestures and ’hmmm’-ing wisely. The UMSS attracts some quality speakers too, including the spritely Catherine Deveny and Jamie Kilstien.
Now… let me tell you about Jamie Kilstien. Jamie was the guest speaker on the first Q/A I went to, titled ’Why people think atheists are dicks?’. He is now (don’t point out the irony, its obnoxious) my god. He was here for the Comedy Festival, and he was hilarious, but more then that he was passionate, reasonable and persuasive when he talked about Atheism . It was like someone turned up the gospel music and turned on the spotlights. Revelation- We’re not in high school any more Toto.
Finally.

MASS:
I’d really like the Arts Society to be like textsfromlastnight.com grade awesome, and it really has no excuse to not be because its full of Arts student who, as everybody knows, are rock stars.
Its really not though.
I mean I didn’t make it to the Paint n Glow (which made it up there with Splendour on the Grass on the list of things that I really wanted to go to but could in no way afford) which apparently was a lot of fun. Did any of the bloggers go? Report back. However, on the whole MASS has been a bit of a disappointment. Its not just that I had to resort to jointing the SSS to snag a free lunch once in a while, but more the general lack of MASS’s presence on campus. All the other faculties seem to have a lot on but Arts seems underrepresented.
Am I being unfair? I dare them to prove me wrong.
On Thursday I turned up to MASS’ AGM info meeting, a little curious, a little not wanting to return to assignment land. The lovely, if slightly harassed looking Pres informed me and (I kid you not) three other people about the workings of the MASS committee and, actually, I left with a funny little thing like purpose. So I think I will join the General Committee and offer my labour to the mercy of the Arts Society.
Well that’s it for me for now. I hope everyone had a great long week end. Stay tuned for my next blog which I think I will call- ‘Arrrrgs%$&^fyhf- The week I had two assignments due.’

  1. Thank you, Mercedes! 🙂 I have to be quick with this comment as I am currently working on an assignment due tomorrow, but I can empathise with your final point; except change “two” to “three”. D:
