Summer (Silvia)

When I think of starting university, I have a certain image in my head. My friends and I on the South Lawn, splayed out like dead eagles in the warm sunshine and laughing like the idiots we are. However, the possibility of that happening is close to zilch. Just look at our recent weather. Why, forty degrees one day and flash floods the next few days! The way things are going, my friends and I will either be slumped in relief in an air-conditioned library or standing up on chairs and tables shrieking as the water rises.

A slight exaggeration, of course. Most of the water around the flooded areas have long drained. But you get the gist of it. My dreams are ruined by Melbourne weather. But the strange thing is, the ever-changing weather is one of the many reasons why I love Melbourne. Hot and humid one second and bucketing down and thundering the next. Our weather is special.

But still, I’d like some respite from the constant sun, then rain, then wind, then sun again. This summer, I want a summer. I want to hang out with my friends in good weather. Is that too much to ask? Mother Nature answers, “Yes.”

This is a little something I wrote a few weeks ago, and it’s my ideal summer. I haven’t experienced something like that yet, but I sure hope to. Who knows? Maybe Mother Nature will take pity on me one day and grant me my wish. I can already see it. Uni, lawn, friends, books, icy-poles…

Endless skies of blue,
A gentle, cooling breeze.
Soft bird songs in the air,
To put me at ease.

Humid air and frozen treats,
Cicadas buzzing in the old, oak tree.
Children running with the fireflies,
Waving and screaming happily.

Unplowed fields stretch on forever,
Tawny wheat bends and sways.
Farmer in his rocking chair,
Sleeping away the summer days.

  1. Love the poem haha, but i can tell you from being in a farming comunity no wheat is swaying kind of all gone (mostly due to the flood destroying it 🙁 ). Im sure that mother nature will get its head around things and get out of its torturous cycle of trying to kill us haha. Im sure that all that stuff will happen (eventually haha)

    1. Haha, thanks! I guess the floods have taken a toll on the farmers 🙁 I have faith in Mother Nature, I’m sure she’ll give us a break sooner or later!

  2. I’m actually glad this hasn’t been a summery summer. I actually can’t wait for the cold days walking through the University halls, hiding in my coat, scarf, gloves and boots, holding a cup of hot chocolate. That’s my type of weather for intellectual enhancement – moody gray, cold and maybe even a few droplets of rain falling down on me.

    1. I usually prefer cooler weather as well (sunburn sucks) but the thought of basking in warm, delicious sunshine is too hard to resist 😛 Especially if I can get ice-cream there as well, mmm 6:

  3. Haha Silvia you won’t think that way if you try to take a 6am train in the morning trying to attend morning lectures 😛

6am is terribly cold in Winter weather…it might be even lower than 10 degree Celsius .

    1. Ugh, you really don’t have to remind me. Besides, I hear there’s audio if you miss lectures so I don’t see much of a problem ^^
