Searching for the American Dream (Georgie)

So it is finally here! And actually, almost over. It’s the third last day of my history trip subject ‘Searching for the American Dream’ which takes place over three weeks in the winter break in: Boston, New York and DC.

It’s been awesome! It wasn’t the group I was expecting and the lecturer that runs it was saying that this is the youngest group he’s ever taken over. But there are heaps of great people, and though it took a couple of days, I learnt all 57 names.

Boston was great. It’s small and pretty and even though we had rain for practically the whole week it was really fun. Highlights were: Seeing the Blue Man Group, visiting Harvard and MIT, going to Fenway Park and watching a Red Sox game – so so awesome, the atmosphere was insane, going to a murder trial and seeing some awesome (hot) dancers on the waterfront.

New York was massive and busy and tall and rude and loud and bright and everything was so recognisable. Highlights were: The MET, walking through Central Park on a sunny afternoon, seeing Alison Janney in 9 to 5 on Broadway, eating dinner at Planet Hollywood and seeing the suit and dress Edward and Bella wore in Twilight, buying a Wall Street Journal on Wall St, going into the General Assembly at the UN headquarters, going to Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, Museum of Modern Art – seeing Andy Warhol’s and Jackson Pollock’s paintings, and going on the Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island. Even though I closed my eyes the whole time and was terrified, I can say I’ve done it.

Washington DC is strange and beautiful and has lots of monuments. Highlights so far include: Meeting the Teamsters, meeting a guy that had met President Obama and a Monuments by Moonlight walking tour.

I can’t believe it’s almost over! At least I have an extra week to look forward to, where I will be going to Virginia with a friend and then coming back to DC for my last few days and hopefully meeting up with some friends from my exchange to Ireland.

So, if anyone is thinking of doing it, I would highly recommend it. It’s expensive, but if you an save it up, it is very worth it. And I only have to do two subjects next semester – woo hoo!

Hope everyone else’s holidays are going well.
