'Ello There Mate! (Phoebe)
This is my first blog post and as you might be able to gather, I’m a little nervous. I find it easy to communicate and connect with people I know but the idea that my thoughts and feelings are being read by many is a little daunting; the mind, after all, is our most private sanctum. However, I decided to jump into something new, some area that was personally undiscovered. For me, Melbourne University has offered me the chance to re-invent myself and become the excited, involved and animated person I would see myself as today.
So my name is Phoebe-Mae, but most people call me Phoebe or Phoebs. When I was younger, I didn’t really like people shortening my name because I felt like it made me less unique. But when I started watching Friends I realized that Phoebe, just like me, was quirky and individual and that maybe being ‘Phoebe’ wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
Coming straight from high school to university, I really had no idea what degree I needed because I had and still have no clue what career I want. A lot of people don’t seem to rate the ‘Melbourne Model’ and admittedly it’s not for everyone, but it does work for me. I’m studying a Bachelor of Arts with the hope of majoring in Criminology and Linguistics. I’m not particularly set on either of these pathways, but I still have a lot of time to decide, which to me is the great thing about this model. It also gives me the freedom to do an education breadth subject whilst also undertaking a criminology subject. It’s not like I’m locked in on some kind of dreaded phone contract where my only choices of escape are to wait it out or cough up ($$$). At the start of first semester, I had these grand plans that I was going to major in Psychology and become a practicing psychologist, but look at me now! I’ve dropped psych in exchange for my new-found love for linguistics.
It’s Week Five now and assignments are coming on thick and fast. Alas, I must now return to my essay, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! Arts Ball is just round the corner, meaning food, fun and most importantly FANCY DRESS!
In the meantime, enjoy your week (and the sunshine)!
