Master Student Life at the School of Languages and Linguistics: Insights from Current Students

Xiaoyi Zhang

As the semester draws to a close, we had the pleasure of interviewing three master students from the School of Languages and Linguistics: Yangyang Li, Wanyi Bo, and Qiyin Huang. They shared their motivations, experiences, challenges, and personal growth throughout their academic journey.

These interviews aim to better understand the student experience and highlight the supportive and dynamic academic environment within the School of Languages and Linguistics.

Why Choose the School of Languages and Linguistics (SOLL)?

The students’ motivations for choosing the SOLL varied from person to person. Qiyin and Yangyang emphasized the SOLL’s excellent reputation and comprehensive curriculum. The opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty members and engage in diverse courses aligned with their academic and career goals was a significant draw.

Wanyi emphasized that her positive undergraduate experience at SOLL and her passion for linguistics motivated her to pursue postgraduate studies. The energetic academic community, advanced facilities, and rich learning environment were crucial in her decision to continue her Master’s studies at SOLL.

Academic Environment: A Blend of Competition and Support

The academic environment at the SOLL is described as both competitive and collaborative. Wanyi noted the invisible pressure felt in the Baillieu Library, where it’s hard to find a seat even early in the morning, which fosters a competitive spirit. However, this competition is balanced by a strong sense of collaboration, especially in group projects and class discussions in each course.

Qiyin appreciated the supportive and open academic atmosphere, where professors and fellow students are helpful, facilitating discussions and sharing resources. For instance, professors often hold additional office hours to provide extra help on complex topics, while students frequently organize study groups to review course materials together and share useful resources, creating a collaborative learning atmosphere. The balance between competitiveness and collaboration creates a stimulating and dynamic learning environment.

Overcoming Academic Challenges

Academic challenges were common experiences for the students. Complex linguistic theories and in-depth discourse analysis posed significant obstacles for Qiyin and Yangyang. Still, both overcame them by increasing their study time, participating in study groups, and seeking additional guidance from their professors. Wanyi needed help with generating and structuring ideas for papers and dealing with group work. Seeking early feedback from tutors and clearly defining roles in group projects were effective strategies for overcoming these challenges.

The University of Melbourne also offers a range of academic support. Academic Skills offers one-to-one advice, workshops, and resources to help students develop the communication and study skills to prepare them for success in their next assignment, upcoming semester, further study, and career beyond university.

Extra-curricular activities and personal growth

Extra-curricular and school activities are vital in enhancing the overall university experience.  Yangyang actively participated in peer mentoring and various college activities, gaining digital credentials and valuable leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. These experiences fuelled her personal growth and garnered well-deserved recognition for her contributions beyond the classroom. The SOLL postgraduate club also offers many exciting activities; if you are interested, you can find their QR code via the previous blog.

Impactful Teachers and Language Barriers

Teaching teams can significantly impact students’ learning experiences. Dr Helen Zhao was mentioned as an exceptionally responsible and inspiring teacher who connected theoretical concepts with practical applications, deeply influencing one student’s attitude towards learning.

Language barriers were a common challenge, especially for non-native English speakers. Strategies to manage these included improving language proficiency through regular practice, seeking support from professors and language support services, and participating in language-focused activities. The university offers resources like Academic English Tutorial to help students overcome these barriers.

Personal and Professional Growth

Experiences at the School of Languages and Linguistics have greatly impacted students’ personal and professional development. The rigorous curricula and research opportunities have enhanced their understanding of applied linguistics and provided invaluable skills. Interactions with a diverse community have enriched their cultural awareness and interpersonal skills.

Prospective students are encouraged to fully engage with faculty, participate in extracurricular activities, and utilize available resources to thrive in this dynamic academic environment.

Future Plans

The students’ post-graduation plans vary. Wanyi and Yangyang aim to pursue a career in English teaching, feeling well-prepared by their education and experiences at the university. They plan to design engaging English language curricula and create inclusive learning environments for their students. Qiyin plans to obtain a teaching license and explore career options in their home country.

In conclusion, the postgraduate students at the School of Languages and Linguistics have diverse and enriching experiences. Their stories reflect the balance of competition and support, the importance of overcoming challenges, and the significant impact of dedicated teachers. As these students prepare for their future careers, their time at SOLL has equipped them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed.
